DR. HARVEY BLACK

 

mojor HARVEY BLACK. MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE 2ND CORP FIELD HOSPITAL. and acting divisional director of hosptial of the 1st brigade va volunteers.

Dr. Harvey Black (1827-88) was a Mexican /American war Veteran who served in Texas as a stretcher bearer then later served in the Civil War as a surgeon with The Stonewall Brigade, 2nd corps field hospital and the hospital of the 1st brigade va. volunteers.  He was chief surgeon in Charge of the  Field Hospitals of the army of the potomec division ( Not battle Field Surgery) at Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign. his 2nd corp hospital served valiently at  Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville. Winter camp at orange court house and Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley campaign.

Dr. Black was a internist and chief of surgery during the operation on General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson after he had been wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and assisted Jackson’s Staff Surgeon Hunter McGuire with the Jackson’s left arm amputation . Also assisting where surgeons Walls and Coleman Harvey Blacks staff assistant surgeons. Dr. Black was a founder and was on the first Board of Visitors of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Virginia Tech. Papers include the Civil War

In 1875 Dr. Black became superintendent of Eastern Lunatic Asylum in Williamsburg also known as Eastern State Hospital. He also served as a Virginia State delegate for 2 sessions.

He was a main advocate for the establishment of a mental health institution in southwest Virginia. He had the Southwest Lunatic Asylum built and was superintendent in 1887. It is now called the southwest Virginia State Hospital.

Dr Black passed away in 1888 at the age of 61 after many bouts with two diseases. This great man who fought two wars and Advocated for Mental health as well as Physical health was a true American hero during and after the Civil war. It my privilege to portray him.

Harvey black sent to camp allen as divisional chief surgeon april 3oth to october 31st 1862. note his commision date may 4th 1861 less than a month after war began. all chief surgeons where given rank of major on joining army.

 

Harvey black returns to brigade by order of gen jackson nov 24th 1862.

 

Harvey black transfered by order of gen jackson to hospital at guinea depot dec 31st 1862.

 

Harvey black takes command of the 2nd corp hospital ( hospital of the 1st brigade va. volunteers) date not given. assume sometime around jan-feb 1863.
